Lady Bears Soccer
Senior midfielder Rachel Gimber and sophomores striker Emily Austerberry and fullback Ashley Pardoski were named to the first team, while senior midfielder Lindsey Crits and sophomore midfielder Raelynn Mikell were given second-team honors.
Seniors striker Sara Gimber and goalkeeper Alyson Reitmeyer and sophomore fullback Lauren Walker earned honorable mention honors.
Rachel Gimber, a first team selection in 2006, garnered her second straight first team honor after finishing the season as the Pioneer Athletic Conference's regulation-season scoring champion with a league-best 13 goals. She also capped off her senior season with six assists to break the school's all-time assists mark with 23.
Austerberry was a pleasant surprise for Boyertown this season, tallying 12 goals in her first year of varsity-side action, second most in the PAC-10 behind Gimber. She also had two assists.
Pardoski, a second-year starter, was a handful out of the back for the Lady Bears this season netting four goals and adding an assist. Three of her goals were scored from distance. She also donned the repeated duty of marking most opponent's top scoring threat.
Crits improved on her honorable mention status from a year ago. She was an one-on-one threat who quarterbacked the Boyertown offense and finished with two goals and an assist.
Mikell, a 2006 All-PAC-10 First Team selection a year ago, overcame a slow start to the season to finish with six goals and four assists. Her four assists were second-most on the team. Five of her goals came off set pieces, but she was just as deadly in the defending and middle thirds on defense with her physical play.
Sara Gimber, a 2006 honorable mention selection, was the Lady Bears' motor all season. In her first-ever season up top, she finished with six goals and two assists while drawing double- and sometimes triple-team efforts throughout the year.
Reitmeyer, a second-team honoree a year ago, finished her senior season with seven clean sheets and 12 wins in the net. She also allowed just 1.70 goals per game this season against some of the state's top Class AAA programs and had an .866 save percentage after stopping a single-season record 219 shots.
Walker was another pleasant surprise in her first full year of varsity duty. After starting the season at striker, Walker was moved to the back to fill in for an injury depleted fullback corps and starred both in the middle and on the outside. She had one assist on the season.
Conestoga held a 20-10 shot advantage, and Lady Bears goalkeeper Alyson Reitmeyer finished her high school career with a 10-save performance in the losing effort.
The technically sound Pioneers made things difficult for the Lady Bears all night, spreading the ball around and limiting any Boyertown offensive effort.
Boyertown ends its season at 12-8.
Reitmeyer came up with two huge overtime saves to keep her team alive, and stopped two more shots during a do-or-die penalty kick shoot-out as the 14th-seeded Lady Bears downed 19th-seeded Avon Grove in the first round of the PIAA District 1 Class AAA playoff tournament at Memorial Stadium.
Reitmeyer kept Boyertown's postseason hopes alive in the 87th minute when she tracked down an Athena Campbell shot from point-blank range, and came up even bigger just 10 minutes later with a one-handed scoop save to send the match into a shoot-out.
Then, after Lady Bears teammate Rachel Gimber made her penalty kick from the stripe, it was Reitmeyer again who stood tall, getting a hand on a Red Devil penalty kick to give Boyertown a 1-0 shoot-out lead.
The Lady Bears made it 2-0 after Ashley Pardoski beat Avon Grove goalkeeper Michelle White to the right on her attempt, but Avon Grove answered on its next attempt to make it 2-1. Raelynn Mikell, who also netted a goal during regulation on a free kick from about 30 yards out, then made it 3-1 on her attempt, but again Avon Grove had an answer and cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Red Devils then caught a break when Boyertown striker Emily Austerberry, who also tallied in regulation, sliced her kick wide to the right, but Reitmeyer came up with quite possibly the biggest save of her career on Avon Grove's next attempt when she anticipated a Red Devil penalty kick to the right and pushed it wide for her second stop of the shoot-out to keep things at 3-2.
April Agresta then finished the Red Devils off with a beautifully placed shot low and to the right to beat White and give the Lady Bears the victory.
With the win, Boyertown's first in four straight district playoff appearances, the Lady Bears will travel to Berwyn to meet third-seeded Conestoga in second-round action. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
Lady Bears seeded 14th for District Tournament.
The Lady Bears will face 19th seed Avon Grove on Tuesday October 23rd in Memorial Stadium. Practice for the girls will be held Monday right after school.
Lady Bears knocked out of PAC-10 tournament.
It was just one of those days for the Boyertown girls soccer team. Unable to muster much offensively, and with their hands full most of the day in the back fighting off a relentless Lansdale Catholic attack, the Lady Bears were eliminated from the Pioneer Athletic Conference tournament, 4-0, on Saturday at Owen J. Roberts. With the victory, the Crusaders will meet Owen J. Roberts, a 2-1 winner over Upper Perkiomen on Wednesday at Wildcat Stadium for the PAC-10 championship. Boyertown is idle until it learns whether it has earned a berth in the District 1 tournament. The district selection committee will announce its tournament selections on Oct. 20. The Crusaders held a 14-10 shot advantage in the victory, and Boyertown goalkeeper Alyson Reitmeyer finished the day with 10 saves.
Boyertown holds off Perkiomen Valley to clinch playoff berth
Nothing was going to keep the Boyertown girls soccer team from celebrating their Senior Night activities in style. Not a little rain that pushed the game back a day; not the fact that all the festivities would be held until after their Pioneer Athletic Conference clash; and not even the fact that a loss would knock the Lady Bears out of contention for a PAC-10 championship should they lose Friday afternoon's game with Division I rival Perkiomen Valley, the team trailing Boyertown by just two points in the points table. No. Nothing was going to get in their way. Three different players had goals, and the Lady Bears got a little help from the Vikings on a fourth as Boyertown down Perkiomen Valley, 4-2, on Friday to clinch the final PAC-10 playoff berth at Memorial Stadium. With the victory, the Lady Bears will meet Division II champion Lansdale Catholic in the PAC-10 semifinal's today at Owen J. Roberts. Game time is slated for 11:30 a.m. Raelynn Mikell kept up her late-season form, and got Boyertown on the board first in the 16th minute when she dropped a textbook free kick just under the crossbar and into the back of the net from about 30 yards out for a 1-0 lead. The Lady Bears made it a 2-0 game in the 29th minute on an Ashley Pardoski shot from range that beat Vikings goalkeeper Amie Cross high and to the left, and Boyertown seemed to be in total control. But Perkiomen Valley rallied back with a goal of its own, thanks to a free kick just outside the Boyertown penalty area that Vikings sweeper Brittany Grimm buried past the outstretched arms of Lady Bears 'keeper Alyson Reitmeyer to cut the deficit to 2-1. But Boyertown got a pair of early second-half goals, one from seniors striker Sara Gimber and another off the head of a Perkiomen Valley defender who misplayed Mikell's corner kick and knocked it into the net to make it a 4-1 game. The Vikings would cut Boyertown's lead to 4-2 late in the game on a Paige Fisher score, but that's all the scoring Perkiomen Valley would get as the Lady Bears held on for the win. Reitmeyer finished the game with seven saves to pick up her 11th win of the season, while Cross finished the day with seven saves of her own in the losing effort. Boyertown outshot the Vikings, 11-9, and held a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks.
NOTES: Boyertown honored its seven seniors with a ceremony at midfield after the game. Seniors honored were forwards Meaghan Fisher and Sara Gimber, midfielders Rachel Gimber and Lindsey Crits, fullbacks April Agresta and Kelly Reilly and goalkeeper Alyson Reitmeyer. … Head coach Bill Goddard elected to start all of the seniors for the game. Reilly (ankle) and Fisher (ACL) both started the game but were promptly removed after the opening tap. Fisher has missed all of the season with her second ACL tear in as many seasons. She hadn't played in a game with the Lady Bears since she tore the ACL last October in a league crossover game with Upper Perkiomen. Reilly hasn't seen any action since rolling her ankle in Boyertown's 3-0 victory over Owen J. Roberts.
Boyertown avenges early-season loss to Rams, 2-0
Quite possibly the lowest point of the Boyertown girls soccer team's season came on a Friday afternoon in Royersford. Walking off the pitch after a 1-0 defeat to an unimpressive Spring-Ford side, in an unimpressive game, featuring unimpressive Boyertown play, the immediate future of the Lady Bears soccer season looked bleak. Oh, how things have changed in the matter of a month. Boyertown got goals from the Pioneer Athletic Conference's top two goalscorers, and goalkeeper Alyson Reitmeyer picked up her sixth clean sheet of the season as the Lady Bears avenged the early-season loss with a 2-0 home victory. Emily Austerberry, currently second in the PAC-10 with 11 goals, got things started for Boyertown in the 19th minute when teammate Rachel Gimber found her open in front of the Rams' net, and Austerberry buried it for a 1-0 lead. Just under 10 minutes later it was Gimber's turn, as the league's top scorer (12 goals) took a Lindsey Crits pass and dumped her half-volley into the side netting along the far post for a 2-0 lead. Boyertown's defensive four held the pace in the back for the entire 80 minutes, limiting Spring-Ford to just 11 shots on the day. The Lady Bears finished the match with 16 shots on goal of their own. Reitmeyer notched 11 saves in the victory, her 10th of the season, while Rams 'keeper Marissa McDowell finished with 14. Boyertown returns to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Tamaqua for a 7 p.m. non-league contest with the undefeated Blue Raiders.
Boyertown Stuns Owen J. Roberts, 3-0
Historically speaking, when the Boyertown girls soccer team meets Pioneer Athletic Conference rival Owen J. Roberts, the outcome has not been good. In a combined 976 minutes of play, the Wildcats have outshot the Lady Bears by more than a 15-to-1 margin, have outscored them 42-1 and have dominated the tempo of each fixture from opening whistle to the end of regulation. History got a little bit of rewriting on Wednesday night. Sophomore striker Emily Austerberry tallied back-to-back goals, her ninth and 10th of the season, and Ashley Pardoski netted a third as Boyertown (6-3 PAC-10, 9-6 overall) dominated their Bucktown nemesis, 3-0, at Memorial Stadium. It was a storybook match for the Lady Bears, who received strong, physical and technically sound play from each of their starting 11, and got strong efforts from their limited reserves off the bench. Austerberry got things started for Boyertown, which had never led a game against Owen J. Roberts, in the 13th minute when Pardoski pushed a through ball in between the Wildcats' inside back tandem of Jenna Galligan and Aimee Bux and on to Austerberry, who timely punched it into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Austerberry then made it a 2-0 game just two minutes later, this time off a textbook cross from Rachel Gimber, who nearly made it 3-0 but was stopped on her penalty kick attempt by Owen J. keeper Becky Weaver. Pardoski finished off the scoring barrage for the Lady Bears in the 35th minute, when she took a Raelynn Mikell corner and deposited it into the back of the net for 3-0. The Lady Bears then turned it over to their defense in the second half, which did not let down. Goalkeeper Alyson Reitmeyer was stellar in the net — and received a bloody lip for her effort — stopping a pair of potentially game-changing 1-v-1 breakaways and an Erika Markley penalty kick down the stretch to up her league-leading clean sheet total to six this season. Reitmeyer finished the night with 20 saves, while Weaver tallied 22. Boyertown held a 25-20 shot advantage and picked up seven corners to Owen J. Roberts' 1.
Monarchs down Lady Bears, 4-3, in wild affair
It wasn't a knockout punch that ended the Lady Bears' day in defeat on Monday. Call it more of a loss by split decision. Boyertown and non-conference foe Gwynedd-Mercy battled back and forth with offensive flurries that were reminiscent of a middleweight prize fight for the first 40 minutes of play before turning the action over to some impressive defense in the second half. The outcome: a 4-3 Lady Bears defeat at the hands of the Monarchs. It was, nonetheless, an inspirational effort that could be the setup for a blockbuster rematch come District 1 playoff time. Gwynedd-Mercy struck the first big blow of the match just 20-plus seconds in when wing midfielder Emily Irons took an Erin Ryan cross and drilled it into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. But Boyertown answered with a couple of offensive flurries of its own, thanks in part to its knockout specialist, Rachel Gimber. The speedy left wing midfielder knotted the game at 1-1 in the 20th minute when she took a pass just past the midfield line, dashed down the touchline, beat her defender to the inside and launched a shot into the side netting on the far post. But that wasn't all Gimber had to offer on the day. Just 30 seconds later, Boyertown central midfielder Raelynn Mikell intercepted a pass out of the back intended for Ryan and found Gimber alone on the outside. Gimber again found the side netting, this time on a one-timer, and just like that the Lady Bears had their first lead of the game. Just two minutes later, the Monarchs tied the match at 2-2 on a Taylor Bettinger goal, but again Boyertown had an answer when Sara Gimber slipped a pass into the middle of the pitch just outside the Gwynedd-Mercy penalty area to an oncoming Mikell. Without breaking stride, Mikell fired her shot low and to the left to beat Monarch keeper Daniella Chieffo and give the Lady Bears the lead back, 3-2. That is all the offense Boyertown would get, though, as Gwynedd-Mercy scored twice in the final two minutes of the first half to regain the lead, 4-3. The offense of the first half was exchanged for some stifling defense in the second as both sides took turns stringing together a number of nice pass combinations into their respective attacking thirds, but failed to muster any offensive firepower. Gimber finished the day with two goals, while Mikell finished with a goal and an assist. Ryan highlighted the Monarchs' winning effort with a goal and two assists. Alyson Reitmeyer tallied 15 saves for Boyertown, which was outshot on the day, 19-14. The Lady Bears return to action on Wednesday when they host Pioneer Athletic Conference rival Owen J. Roberts at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in a key A Division showdown.
Boyertown slips past Upper Darby, 1-0
It wasn't the prettiest of efforts on Friday, but it got the job done. Boyertown (8-5) struggled to break down the smothering bunker-down defensive system of visiting non-conference foe Upper Darby for most of the day before striker Sara Gimber finally broke the scoring deadlock late in the first half and give the Lady Bears the 1-0 win. With under 10 minutes to play in the first half, Gimber found herself in the right place and the right time when twin sister Rachel sent a finely timed cross in to her feet, allowing Sara Gimber to turn and fire a shot by the Upper Darby keeper for the eventual game-winner. Boyertown goalkeeper Alyson Reitmeyer needed to make just one save against an Upper Darby squad that crossed the midline just a handful of times on the day. The Lady Bears return to action on Monday when they travel to Gwynedd-Mercy for a 3:30 p.m. non-league showdown.
Lady Bears get back on track with rout of Winged Lions
For most of the season, the Boyertown girls soccer team has been looking for that offensive spark.
For most of the season, that spark has come from the strike trio of Rachel and Sara Gimber and Emily Austerberry.
But for 80 minutes on Wednesday night, everyone seemed to be getting into the action.
Lindsey Crits and Sam Kochey each scored two goals, while the Gimber twins, Austerberry, Raelynn Mikell and Sami Eddinger each added solo tallies to lead the Lady Bears to a 9-0 victory at Memorial Stadium. Rachel Gimber also added two assists in the win, while Austerberry and Jordy Heidelbaugh each had an assist of their own. Boyertown goalkeepers Alyson Reitmeyer and Lizzie Kish combined for the clean sheet, needing to make just 3 saves. The Lady Bears held a 37-3 shot advantage, and were awarded 10 corners. The Winged Lions did not take a corner on the evening. Boyertown returns to action at 4 p.m. on Friday with a non-league matchup against Upper Darby on the Boyertown soccer fields near Bear Stadium.
Lansdale Catholic knocks off Lady Bears for first time since 2003
The Boyertown girls soccer team had their chances on Monday; they just didn't make the most of them. Freshman Megan Poiesz split the Lady Bears defense in the 69th minute and beat goalkeeper Alyson Reitmeyer low and to the right to give the Crusaders a 1-0 victory in Pioneer Athletic Conference crossover action. Boyertown controlled the flow of play for a good deal of the first half in its attacking third, but missed on early chances from Sara Gimber, Emily Austerberry and Raelynn Mikell to keep the match deadlocked at 0-0. It was much of the same thing in the opening minutes of the second half, until it appeared the Lady Bears had found an opening and a scoring chance when it was awarded a corner. Mikell's high lofted kick caromed off the front of the crossbar and fell to the pitch right in front of the Lansdale Catholic net, but freshman striker Tasha Miller could not convert, knocking the ball wide of the net. Just a few minutes later, Poiesz hit Boyertown with the heartbreaker when she found herself on the right end of a Gabby McCarron flighted ball in between the Lady Bears center-backs. Poiesz slipped through the coverage and scooted the ball under an oncoming Reitmeyer for the goal. Boyertown attempted to rally back over the next 11 minutes, but failed to muster a goal as the Crusaders held on for the victory. The Lady Bears will host St. Pius X in their final PAC-10 crossover game of the regular season at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Memorial Stadium.
Boyertown downs ranked Archbishop Carroll in non-league action
Emily Austerberry and Rachel Gimber did the offensive work early, and the Lady Bears held on in the second half to down Archbishop Carroll, 2-1, on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. The Patriots (4-0 Phila. Catholic League, 8-1 overall), ranked eighth in Southeastern Pa. by the Philadelphia Inquirer, were held the just six shots in the first half as Boyertown controlled a majority of the action in its middle and attacking thirds. Austerberry put Boyertown (6-4) on the board in the 31st minute when she beat Archbishop goalkeeper Bridgette Devine wide for a 1-0 lead. Just a few minutes later, Austerberry would get another bite at the apple, but nailed the crossbar to end the threat. Then, just five minutes in the second half, Gimber got one of the more unusual goals of her career. In full sprint, Gimber dashed down the touchline along the right side of the pitch, beat her defender and flighted a cross from right to left in front of the Patriots goal. Devine came off her line to make the save and attempted to parry the ball over the crossbar, but it hit the crossbar and then Devine in the back of the head and fell into the back of the net to make it a 2-0 game. Archbishop Carroll cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 59th minute when Eileen Boneck bent a highlight reel free kick around the Lady Bears wall just outside the penalty area that broke back into the net and just out of the reach of outstretched Boyertown goalkeeper Alyson Reitmeyer. But that is all the scoring the Patriots would get as Reitmeyer thwarted a couple of late attempts to give the Lady Bears the victory. Reitmeyer finished with 18 saves on the day, while Devine and Hollie Mershon combined for 20 in the losing effort. Boyertown returns to action on Monday when they travel to Lansdale for a Pioneer Athletic Conference showdown with the conference's lone unbeaten, Lansdale Catholic.
Boyertown Stays Perfect In PAC-10 Crossover Action
Boyertown received a strong overall offensive effort on Thursday night while facing little in the way of an offensive attack from visiting Phoenixville to roll to a 6-1 victory at Memorial Stadium. Six different players scored for the Lady Bears (4-2 PAC-10, 5-4 overall), who took a 4-1 lead into halftime, and Boyertown held a 24-6 advantage over the Phantoms in shots taken. Raelynn Mikell notched her first goal of the game in the fourth minute when she sent a direct kick right over the Phantoms' wall and just inside the near post for a 1-0 lead. PAC-10 scoring leader Rachel Gimber then gave the Lady Bears a 2-0 lead a minute later when she finished off a crossfield pass from sister Sara Gimber. Phoenixville would cut the deficit to 2-1 midway through the half, though, as Grace Farrell stepped in front of Boyertown goalkeeper Alyson Reitmeyer's clearance ball and slipped it into the wide open net. Boyertown would add two more goals before the half on strikes from Emily Austerberry and Ashley Pardoski, and added an insurance goal in the second half off the foot of Sam Kochey. Lizzie Kish teamed with Reitmeyer to notch 5 saves on the night, while Phoenixville keeper Christina Giampietro tallied 19. Boyertown returns to action on Saturday when they face Archbishop Carroll at 3 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
It took a while for Boyertown (4-2 PAC-10, 4-4 overall) to get its offense rolling on Tuesday night as Pottsgrove bunkered down with 10 players in behind the ball in the Lady Bears' attacking third early on, but it was Gimber, the PAC-10's scoring leader and this week's Mercury newspaper female athlete of the week, who found a hole in the 22nd minute.
Raelynn Mikell placed a nice through ball in behind the Falcon defense just in front of the speedy Lady Bears' wing midfielder, and Gimber used some fancy footwork to beat her oncoming defender and launch a left-to-right shot to the far post and past the Pottsgrove goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.
Gimber again broke free in behind the Falcon defense four minutes later and hit sophomore striker Austerberry, who notched her fifth goal of the season with a fine shot into the corner of the net to give Boyertown a two-goal lead.
Kochey then finished off the scoring barrage in the 71st minute when she finished off a Jordy Heidelbaugh pass right in front of the Pottsgrove net for her first varsity goal of her career.
Boyertown outshot Pottsgrove, 16-6, on the night, and Lady Bears keeper Alyson Reitmeyer notched six saves in the win for her third clean sheet of the season.
The Lady Bears return to action on Thursday afternoon when they host Division II foe Phoenixville at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in a PAC-10 crossover game.
